NEET Controversy: Opposition Slams Centre Over Alleged Irregularities

In a heated political battle over the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), opposition leaders have launched scathing criticisms against the Centre, accusing it of mishandling the prestigious medical entrance examination. NEET, which witnessed participation from 24 lakh students on May 5, has become embroiled in controversy following allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in the conduct of the exam.

The DMK, a vocal critic of NEET since its inception, has accused the National Testing Agency (NTA) of compromising the exam’s integrity. They have lambasted the Centre for its alleged inaction, labeling it as a mere “spectator” while also backing coaching centers. Meanwhile, the Congress has taken aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence on the issue and demanding a Supreme Court-monitored investigation.

The controversy escalated when results were announced on June 4, coinciding with the 2024 Lok Sabha election results, sparking allegations of a perfect score by 67 students and a sharp rise in the cutoff marks. Students have protested the award of grace marks, claiming it has artificially inflated scores. The matter is currently sub judice, with the Supreme Court deliberating on the cancellation of grace marks for 1,563 candidates.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has refuted claims of a paper leak or corruption within the NTA, asserting that all pertinent facts are under judicial review. He criticized the politicization of the issue, emphasizing its detrimental impact on students’ mental well-being.

Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have accused the Modi government of jeopardizing the future of NEET aspirants through alleged malpractice and negligence. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra criticized the Education Minister for dismissing concerns raised by students and parents.

The controversy has garnered nationwide attention, with allies of the ruling government and opposition parties alike expressing solidarity with affected students. RJD leader Tejasjwi Yadav and Trinamool’s Bratya Basu have condemned the Centre’s handling of the NEET-UG, citing it as detrimental to aspiring doctors nationwide.

As the Supreme Court prepares to resume hearings on July 8 and counseling for medical college seats commences on July 6, the NEET controversy shows no signs of abating. The fate of millions of aspiring doctors hangs in the balance, awaiting clarity on the exam’s integrity and fairness.
