After 40 days Delhi endures a respite from heatwave as its maximum temperature falls below 40°C

Delhi Weather: On Saturday, the heat index decreased by six degrees. On Sunday, the IMD predicts a mostly cloudy sky with a chance of light rain.

On Saturday, the highest temperature recorded in Delhi was 39.4 degrees Celsius. After several weeks of extreme heatwave conditions, the capital saw relief for the first time in 40 days with this dip below 40 degrees Celsius.

Following May 14, when 40.2 degrees Celsius was the highest temperature ever recorded, the maximum temperature increased, resulting in a run of heat waves starting on May 27. Over seven days this month saw heatwaves with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius. In the capital, over 448 individuals were admitted to several government hospitals, and at least 90 deaths linked to heatstroke were reported.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that Delhi will likely see cloudy skies on Sunday along with a chance of light rain. Its weekly forecast indicates that over the next few days, there will be thunderstorms, rain, and mainly cloudy skies.

On Saturday, the heat index was 47 degrees Celsius with a relative humidity of 45 to 78 percent. When relative humidity is added to temperature readings, the heat index, also known as apparent temperature, calculates how hot a person feels on their skin. A technique developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is used to measure it. The heat index was 53 degrees Celsius on Friday, which was six degrees warmer than it was on Saturday.

The minimum temperature recorded in Safdarjung base station was 29.6 degrees Celsius, which is two notches above the season’s normal reading.

Over Northwest India on Sunday, rain is expected to be scattered to moderately widespread. The maximum and lowest temperatures in Delhi are expected to be between 40 and 30 degrees Celsius, respectively, based on the regional Met prediction. According to the IMD, there is a high probability of heatwave conditions over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Monday and Tuesday, after which it will likely subside.
