Empathy in Leadership: Mayor Hakim’s Thoughtful Gesture Uplifts Kolkata Resident

Firhad Hakim, the Mayor of Kolkata, has once again demonstrated his commitment to the city’s residents, earning him the title of a true statesman. On Monday evening, Hakim captured the hearts of many with his heartwarming act that is sure to brighten anyone’s day.

The story centers around Afrin Sultana, a 23-year-old resident of Elliot Road, who lives with her mother, a cancer patient. Afrin’s father passed away two years ago, and she struggles with both speaking clearly and moving around. Despite these challenges, Afrin never misses an opportunity to call into the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s ‘Mayor on Call’ program every Saturday, although her words often go unheard due to their indistinctness.

Moved by Afrin’s persistence, Mayor Hakim decided to meet her in person. Realizing that Afrin had difficulty traveling, he made arrangements to bring her and her mother to the municipal office. Afrin had longed for this meeting, a dream now realized by the compassionate mayor.

On the appointed day, Mayor Hakim sent a car to bring Afrin and her mother from their home on Elliot Road to the municipal office. Contrary to seeking charity, Afrin had a modest request: she wanted a job. She mentioned that a mid-day meal preparation center operates near her home and expressed her desire to work there.

Mayor Hakim received Afrin’s application and assured her that he would discuss her employment with the state’s Minister for Social Welfare. This promise brought immense joy to Afrin and her mother, who left the meeting with renewed hope.

This touching encounter highlights Firhad Hakim’s dedication to his constituents, proving that leadership is not just about governance but also about empathy and action.
