Severe storms lash France, Switzerland, and Italy, leaving at least seven dead

Authorities reported that hundreds have been evacuated due to landslides and flooding caused by the heavy rains.

Seven people have died as a result of the severe storms and torrential rains that hit France, Switzerland, and Italy this past weekend, according to local officials.

The local authorities told the AFP news agency on Sunday that three people in their 70s and 80s died in the northeastern Aube region of France on Saturday after a tree crushed the car they were travelling in during strong winds.

According to local authorities in nearby Switzerland, landslides and flooding in two southern cantons were triggered by strong thunderstorms and melting snow, resulting in four deaths and two missing persons.

According to a statement from the police, three of the victims died early on Sunday in a landslide in the isolated Maggia valley in the Italian-speaking Alpine canton of Ticino.

The civil security services said “several hundred” people were evacuated in Valais and roads closed after the Rhone and its tributaries overflowed in different locations.

Emergency services were determining the best way to evacuate about seventy additional individuals from a holiday camp in the village of Mogno, while 300 more people had come for a football competition in Peccia.

As authorities had previously stated, the bad weather was making rescue operations extremely challenging because multiple valleys were cut off from the electrical network and unreachable.

The federal alert system also said part of the canton was without drinking water.

Last weekend, southeastern Switzerland was also hit by extremely heavy rain, which resulted in one death and significant damage.

Internet users posted pictures of massive floods and swollen rivers barreling down mountain slopes in the Aosta valley in northern Italy.

Scientists say climate change driven by human activity is increasing the severity, frequency and length of extreme weather events such as floods and storms.
