IMD issues Red Alert for rains in Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra

On Sunday, the IMD issued a red alert, the highest degree of warning, for heavy rains across Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra. Furthermore, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, Kerala, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are under an orange alert for strong showers.

The Disaster Management Authority reported that Saturday’s strong rainfall in Valsad caused the water level in Gujarat’s Madhuban dam to rise. Disaster Management Officer Naseem Sheikh was quoted by PTI as stating, “Many low-lying areas have been inundated due to heavy rain in Valsad district, and the national highway was also flooded.”
He added, “Teams from disaster cells were deployed to drain the water from these areas.”

In its July 13 weather forecast, the Meteorological Department warned that Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala, and Karnataka might see “heavy to very heavy rainfall” until July 18.

According to IMD, there could be rain spells in Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh until July 17. In addition, rain is predicted for the following two days in the southern Indian region of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and for Andhra Pradesh through July 15.

Considering that the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has issued a red signal for heavy showers, four districts in Maharashtra could experience exceptionally high rainfall today. For Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri, a red alert is in effect.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places very likely,” the RMC said in its weather report. A yellow notice has also been issued for Mumbai and Palghar, and an orange alert for Thane, Raigad, and Pune.

The meteorological department also forecasted “heavy rainfall” for Uttar Pradesh through July 15, Himachal Pradesh on July 16 and 17, and Uttarakhand and East Rajasthan through July 17.

Odisha likely to receive “heavy rainfall till July 17 while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur will experience wet spells till July 16. Other eastern and north-eastern states including West Bengal and Sikkim will possibly experience precipitation till July 15 while Bihar may see showers today.
