Rahul Gandhi to Appear in Court Today Over Defamation Case

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will appear before the MP-MLA court in Sultanpur today for a hearing in a defamation case filed against him.

The case pertains to alleged objectionable remarks made by Gandhi against Amit Shah, the current Union Home Minister and then BJP president, in 2018.

The case was filed by local BJP leader Vijay Mishra on August 4, 2018, accusing Gandhi of making derogatory comments against Amit Shah during a press conference in Bengaluru .

Gandhi was granted bail in the case on February 20, and his lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, had requested a “last chance” for his client to appear in court due to his busy schedule in Parliament.

Special Magistrate Shubham Verma has summoned Gandhi to record his statement today, warning of stern action if he fails to comply, as he has missed 12 consecutive hearings.

The remark was accusing Amit Shah in a ” murder” case. Vijay Mishra, a local BJP filled the case against Amit Shah, accusing Rahul Gadhi of hampering Amit Shah’s reputation and social Image.

The defamation charges are under Indian Penal Code sections 499 (deals with spreading rumours to damage someone’s reputation) and section 500 ( pertains to defamation).
