Karnataka Cabinet Clears Proposal to Rename Ramanagara District

The Karnataka Cabinet has approved the renaming of Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South district.

The decision to rename the district was based on a demand by people and legislators from the district.

The Revenue Department is expected to start the process of renaming the district shortly.

Only the name of the district will change, and the taluks (Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli) will remain the same.

The renaming is intended to associate the district with the global recognition of Bengaluru, which is expected to benefit the local economy.

The renaming has gained political significance ahead of the Channapatna Assembly bypolls, with opposition parties alleging that the move is intended to exploit real estate opportunities.

The Karnataka Cabinet has given its nod to rename Ramanagara district as Bengaluru South district, following a long-standing demand from locals and legislators. The decision aims to leverage Bengaluru’s global recognition to boost the local economy.

The renaming process will be initiated by the Revenue Department soon. The taluks within the district – Ramanagara, Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli – will retain their existing names. The proposal was submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah by a delegation led by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on July 9.
Shivakumar, who is also the in-charge Minister for Ramanagara, first proposed the renaming in October 2023, citing development and future growth prospects.

The opposition has raised concerns that the renaming is politically motivated, alleging that it aims to exploit real estate opportunities ahead of the Channapatna Assembly by-polls.
