A 50-year-old American woman, identified as Lalita Kayi, was found chained to a tree in a forest in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district.
The woman was found in Sonurli village, approximately 450 kilometers from Mumbai.
She was found frail and weak, with no food or water for several days. A photocopy of her US passport and an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address were recovered from her possession.
As per suspection of the police forces, her husband tied her to the tree and abandoned her in the forest. According to reports, the woman has been staying in Tamil Nadu, where the husband is native to, for the last 10 years and also her visa has expired. A police official said, ” She is not in a position to give her statement. She is weak as she had not eaten for a couple of days. Besides, the area where she was found had experienced heavy rain. We don’t know for how long she was tied to that the tree.”
Police teams have been sent to Mumbai, Goa, and Tamil Nadu to trace her husband and family members.
The woman is being treated at Goa Medical College and Hospital, and her condition is stable.
A case is yet to be registered. The incident is currently under investigation, and the police are working to verify the woman’s claims and identify her husband.
