In the men’s javelin final at the Paris Olympics, the Tokyo champion Neeraj Chopra took home a silver medal with his best effort 89.45m. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem broke the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97 meters to win the gold medal, a surprise to the athletics community.
Even by his own standards, Neeraj Chopra’s evening was peculiar: just one perfect throw in a total of 6 But just that one throw was enough to earn him the silver medal in the Olympics, elevate his stature in Indian sports, and make him only the fourth Indian to win multiple medals at the Olympics in individual sports.
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won the gold medal in athletics with a huge throw of 92.97 meters, making Chopra the first Indian to win both gold and silver at the Olympics. He won the first Olympic medal for Pakistan since 1992.
Chopra was very picky about the contests he was competing in and had been battling with a groin injury leading up to the Paris Olympics 2024, raising questions about his performance in the French metropolis. However, his qualification throw dispelled all of these questions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday heaped praises on Neeraj Chopra after he became the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win two successive Olympic medals “Neeraj Chopra is excellence personified! Time and again he’s shown his brilliance. India is elated that he comes back with yet another Olympic success. Congratulations to him on winning the Silver. He will continue to motivate countless upcoming athletes to pursue their dreams and make our nation proud”.
