The entire country of India is currently grappling with incessant rainfall, leading to widespread flooding in various regions. Tripura has been one of the worst-hit states, with a severe flood situation. Now, Gujarat in western India is also facing the wrath of nature, with devastating floods caused by relentless downpours over the past few days.
In the last three days alone, excessive rainfall has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 26 lives in Gujarat. The heavy rains, which continued unabated for a fourth consecutive day on Wednesday, have left several parts of the state submerged in floodwaters. In response to the worsening conditions, authorities have evacuated nearly 17,800 people from flood-hit areas to safer locations.
One of the most harrowing incidents occurred on Sunday in the Dhawana village of Halvad Taluka, Morbi district. A tractor went missing while attempting to cross an overflowing bridge, underscoring the severity of the flood situation. The relentless rains have not only caused rivers to overflow but have also led to the collapse of infrastructure in various parts of the state. For instance, in Vadodara, even after the rains subsided, the banks of the Vishwamitri River gave way, resulting in the inundation of large areas of the city.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided little relief in its forecasts, warning that heavy rainfall is expected to continue in various parts of Gujarat in the coming days. As the flood situation deteriorates, the state government is on high alert. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally reviewed the situation, speaking with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to assess the damage and provide assurances of full support from the central government in tackling the disaster.
The situation in Gujarat is critical, with thousands displaced, infrastructure damaged, and lives lost. As the state braces for more rain, the focus remains on rescue and relief efforts, with authorities working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of this natural calamity.
