Protest continues in Bangladesh: death count rises to 39

The death toll from violent protests in Bangladesh rose to 39 on Thursday, as hundreds of students demanding reforms in civil service hiring clashed with riot police.

Students are demanding the abolition of the quota system that allocates up to 30% of government jobs to the families of veterans from Bangladesh’s war of independence. The students claim that the system is discriminatory and that the jobs should instead be awarded based on merit.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has supported the quota system, arguing that veterans’ families deserve respect for their contributions during the war. However, the government has said it is open to discussing reforms.

The protests, which began earlier this month, have also seen clashes between students and members of the student wing of the ruling party.

The government has responded to the protests by closing schools and universities and restricting internet access . The government has also blamed the opposition parties for inciting the unrest.
