Accidents are happening due to overtaking in Kolkata

Overtaking of buses is not a new thing. If a bus of the same route overtakes another bus, then the overtaking bus gets a higher ‘commission’. More passengers are available for overtaking and commission is given in private buses and incentives are given in government buses for getting more passengers.

In such a situation, even if the talk is roundabout, but due to this incentive or commission, the drivers of various private and government buses are playing with the lives of people in the affair of overtaking. They probably do not know that the person whose life has come to the fore due to overtaking or sometimes even loses his life, they also have families.

Accidents happen every day in Kolkata due to overtaking of buses and people lose their lives in this. About a month ago, on December 11, 2021, a lady employee of Food Corporation of India was going to catch the bus on Taratalla Road, when a bus from the wrong side tried to overtake the bus in which the woman was killed.

On December 24, three people, including a couple, were killed in a road accident on the Sampreeti flyover in South 24 Parganas. While trying to overtake a bike, a tourist bus coming from the front lost control and hit it. On November 12, a bus full of passengers collided with a divider on the road and overturned between the Resaresi in two buses in Maniktala. These are just a few examples, there have been many more incidents of such overtaking.

Obviously not overtaking, but thousands of cases of overspeed happen in Kolkata every year. In the year 2018, there were 15,220 cases of overspeeding in Kolkata, 8,350 in 2019 and 4579 in 2020. At the same time, a total of 40,697 cases of rash driving were registered in the year 2020.

There is a provision of punishment from the Kolkata Traffic Police for overtaking, but this punishment is minor.

For the first time, if someone comes in an overtaking case, he is punished with a fine of Rs 1,000 and for the second time Rs 2,000. In such a situation, there is a need to make this punishment more strict so that people think ten times before overtaking.
