Assam Floods: Critical & chaotic situation; Kaziranga impacted

The Brahmaputra River is over the danger mark, resulting in 48 deaths and approximately 11 lakh impacted people across 23 districts.

The worst-hit areas are Lakhimpur (over 165,000 impacted), Darrang (over 147,000 affected), and Golaghat (almost 107,000 affected) due to flooding.

According to an official bulletin, the flood situation in Assam drastically worsened on Tuesday, resulting in the reports of three more deaths and over 11.3 lakh people impacted across 23 districts.

As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s (ASDMA) daily flood bulletin, a person died in Tinsukia district’s Sadiya and Doomdooma revenue circles, while another person drowned in Jonai, Dhemaji district. This raises the overall number of people killed by the storms, landslides, and flooding this year to 48.

In districts like Barpeta, Biswanath, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, Tinsukia, and Udalguri, over 1,134,400 people are reportedly affected, according to the report. The worst-hit areas are Lakhimpur (over 165,000 impacted), Darrang (over 147,000 affected), and Golaghat (almost 107,000 affected) due to flooding.

More than 644,000 people in 18 districts were impacted as of Monday. In 21 districts, the administration has established 489 relief camps and distribution facilities, housing 286,776 people. Approximately 2,850 individuals have been rescued by the Air Force, Emergency Services, SDRF, NDRF, and Civil Administration from different areas of the state.

The ASDMA has given flood victims 23,061.44 litres of mustard oil, 1,958.89 quintals of dal, 554.91 quintals of salt, and 10,754.98 quintals of rice over the last 24 hours. At the moment, 42,476.18 hectares of farming have been devastated by flooding, and 2,208 communities are under water. In other districts, the infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and embankments, has also been impacted.

The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger areas at Dhubri, Guwahati, Tezpur, and Nimatighat. Subansiri, Burhidihing, Dikhou, Disang, Dhansiri, Jia Bharali, Puthimari, Kopili, and Beki are among the tributaries that are likewise above the danger line. At different places, the Barak River and its tributaries, the Kushiyara and Dhaleswari, run across the red mark. The state’s severe flooding has had an impact on over 832,000 domestic animals and poultry.

The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted very heavy rainfall in Assam and the neighbouring state of Meghalaya until Friday.
