A University of Illinois Chicago student, Mohammad Nusairat, has sparked controversy with remarks during a recent sermon at the university’s MSA – Muslim Students Association. In a video that surfaced online, Nusairat expressed strong views, referring to America, its government, and democracy as “cancers” that have spread globally. The speech, reportedly delivered on May 3, 2024, has since ignited widespread criticism and debate.
Nusairat, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Data Science with a concentration in Computer Science according to his LinkedIn profile, voiced provocative opinions during his address. He denounced America’s secularism, democracy, and capitalism, claiming they have inflicted harm both domestically and internationally. He criticized what he perceived as societal freedoms in America, contrasting them with his interpretation of Islamic principles.
“There’s a fatigue among Muslims towards the American government and democracy,” Nusairat stated, advocating for a different societal model aligned with Islamic values. He emphasized the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings as a source of mercy and tranquility, suggesting Islam as a solution to global societal issues.
The video of Nusairat’s sermon quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting a deluge of reactions. Many expressed outrage, with calls for Nusairat to leave the country if he harbors such negative views towards America. Criticism intensified online, with some demanding consequences such as revocation of scholarships or visas.
In a related incident, another UIC student, Musab Kazi, was also featured in a video from April 26, 2024, where he discussed the liberation of Masjid Al-Aqsa and the role of Muslims in achieving it, distancing himself from American involvement.
The University of Illinois Chicago has not issued an official statement regarding the controversy sparked by Nusairat’s remarks. The incident underscores ongoing tensions and debates surrounding free speech, cultural integration, and religious expression on college campuses nationwide. As reactions continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how the university and broader community will address the fallout from Nusairat’s comments.
