Kolkata: In a major breakthrough, Kolkata Police has successfully recovered Rs 5 lakh from a cyber fraud case, offering a sense of relief to the victim. The incident began on June 28, when a woman from Jadavpur received a call from an unknown number. The caller posed as a representative of the Delhi Crime Branch, falsely accusing her of involvement in smuggling illegal documents and drugs via a parcel registered in her name.
The scammer, using the victim’s personal information to appear legitimate, threatened her with arrest unless she paid a fine. Panicked by the alarming threat, the woman transferred Rs 5 lakh through RTGS (Real-Time Gross Settlement). However, when inconsistencies in the scammer’s story started to emerge in follow-up conversations, she grew suspicious and immediately reported the matter to the Cyber Cell of the South Suburban Division through Jadavpur Police Station.
Under the leadership of Sergeant Sanjay Saha, the Cyber Cell team launched a swift investigation into the case. The team’s dedication and expertise enabled them to trace and recover the stolen amount within a little over two months, bringing the case to a successful conclusion on September 4.
This case underscores Kolkata Police’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and protecting citizens from fraudulent activities. Their quick action and determination have once again proven their effectiveness in ensuring justice and safeguarding the public.
The complainant has expressed her gratitude to the police, and authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant against similar scams.
