Education Minister Assures NEET-UG Candidates Amidst Controversy

In the wake of controversy surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG), Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has stepped in to address concerns raised by students who appeared for the exam. Pradhan convened a meeting with NEET-UG candidates to provide assurance that no injustice would be tolerated and that a transparent process would be upheld.

Pradhan’s assurance comes amidst growing apprehensions among NEET-UG aspirants regarding various aspects of the examination process. Addressing reporters from ANI, Pradhan reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring fairness in the examination process. “Students who wanted to meet us today, I called them, their parents also came, I met them. I heard their side, and I made them feel better. The government is committed, and all students should have this assurance that a transparent process will be followed,” Pradhan stated.

With approximately 24 lakh students applying for the NEET-UG exam, concerns emerged regarding certain irregularities observed during the examination process. Pradhan acknowledged these concerns, highlighting instances where issues such as irregularities in examination centers and objections to the formula used for granting grace marks were identified and rectified promptly.

Notably, the Supreme Court intervened in response to these concerns, permitting candidates to reappear for the examination in select cases. “The Supreme Court permitted them to take the exam again yesterday, they have been informed. Those who want to take the exam can take the exam there as well,” Pradhan affirmed.

The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), serves as the gateway for admission to various medical and dental courses across government and private institutions in India. Despite its significance, the examination has been marred by allegations of question paper leaks and irregularities, particularly in states like Bihar.

The controversy surrounding NEET-UG has sparked protests in several cities, with demands for a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities. Recent reports of a record number of candidates scoring a perfect 720 in the examination have further fueled suspicions of foul play, with concerns raised over the role of grace marks in determining ranks.

In response to mounting pressure, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre and the NTA, following a plea for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged question paper leaks and other irregularities surrounding the examination.

As the NEET-UG controversy continues to unfold, students and stakeholders await further developments, hopeful for a resolution that upholds the integrity and fairness of the examination process.
