Former Indian Coach Anshuman Gaekwad Battling Leukemia, Kapil Dev Urges BCCI for Support

Anshuman Gaekwad, former coach of the Indian cricket team, is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia in England. The cricketing community, including former teammates like Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Dilip Vengsarkar, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri, and Kirti Azad, have rallied together to raise funds for Gaekwad’s medical expenses. Despite their efforts, additional financial support is still needed for his ongoing treatment.

Kapil Dev, the legendary captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team, expressed deep sorrow over Gaekwad’s condition. In a heartfelt interview, Kapil Dev revealed his decision to contribute his pension funds towards Gaekwad’s treatment. He has also appealed to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to step in and provide assistance. Kapil Dev highlighted the lack of a dedicated fund for the medical treatment of former cricketers, a gap that has become painfully evident in Gaekwad’s case.

“It is disheartening and painful to see Anshu in this condition,” said Kapil Dev. “Having played alongside him, it is unbearable to witness his suffering. No one should have to endure such a situation. I hope the BCCI shows care and responsibility towards him.”

Kapil Dev pointed out the disparity in financial security between current and former players. While today’s cricketers and support staff earn substantial sums, the players from earlier eras did not enjoy such financial benefits. He suggested the creation of a trust fund by the BCCI to support the medical needs of former players who, like Gaekwad, find themselves in dire circumstances.

“Unfortunately, we do not have a system in place to support our former players in such situations,” he added. “It is heartening to see current players earning well, but it is crucial to remember those who paved the way. Standing by Anshu now is the right thing to do. He bravely faced fierce bowlers on the field, and now is the time for cricket lovers to stand by him and pray for his recovery.”

Kapil Dev’s plea underscores the need for a structured support system for former cricketers, ensuring they receive the necessary care and assistance in their times of need.
