According to an official at the IMD‘s Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, the districts will experience oppressively hot and muggy conditions until Wednesday.
From Wednesday onward, the India Meteorological Department has predicted thundershowers and strong winds throughout the regions of south Bengal, which are also expected to lower the state’s temperature.
On Monday, a representative from the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata stated that the districts would experience oppressively hot and humid conditions through Wednesday. According to the official, thunderstorms and rain are predicted to arrive starting on Wednesday in the districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, and Kolkata.
“There is a possibility of rain in the districts of West Midnapore and West Burdwan as well. However, the heatwave will continue there. From Thursday onwards, rain will intensify in all districts of south Bengal,” said the official.
“In the districts of north Bengal where the monsoon has already arrived, there will be more heavy downpours. Rainfall in the districts of Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar is expected to be heavy to extremely heavy. The severe rains will persist in the remaining areas of north Bengal”, he said.
Nine places in south Bengal saw temperatures close to 40 degrees Celsius on Sunday, with the maximum temperature of the day being 43 degrees at Kalaikunda in the West Midnapore district.
