IMD’s rain red alert for Maharashtra, Gujarat today; showers likely in Delhi-NCR

IMD predicted light rain for the next three days in Delhi-NCR and issued a red alert for portions of Gujarat and Maharashtra on Saturday.

In anticipation of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for sections of Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa in its most recent forecast. According to IMD, Gujarat and the southern peninsula of India may get heavy rains till Sunday.

On Tuesday, the low pressure region that had developed over the Bay of Bengal gave way to a depression as it proceeded upward, in the direction of Odisha. The depression is gradually moving towards the northwest and southwest regions; it was situated close to Puri, Gopalpur, and Paradip.

“The system is expected to move northwestwards and cross the Odisha coast, near Puri, as a depression on Saturday morning. Thereafter, it would further move west-northwestwards across Odisha – Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually,” IMD’s Friday forecast said.

The weather department have issued a red alert for Telangana, central Maharashtra, coastal Goa, and Gujarat on Saturday because to the depression’s landward track. In the meantime, a weekend orange alert was issued for coastal Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Kutch, and Saurashtra.

Over the course of the next day, these locations should have 115–120 mm of rainfall. For the next three days, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and eastern Rajasthan are expected to see moderate to heavy rainfall, according to the IMD forecast.

In addition, the IMD issued a “signal 3” warning for Andhra Pradesh’s coastal areas as the state continues to be battered by intense rain. A potential cyclonic storm was alerted to vessels in Kalingapatnam, Visakhapatnam, and Kakinada using the signal 3 port warning.

On Friday, due to heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh, school holidays were proclaimed in a number of these regions as rainwater swamped streets and seeped into homes.

Meanwhile, Delhi is expected to get three days of mild, isolated rainfall, according to the weather department. On Saturday, Delhi-NCR is expected to reach a maximum temperature of about 36 degrees Celsius. On July 21 and 22, the capital is expected to see light rain.

From June 1 to July 19, the total rainfall in India was 324.4 mm, or 98 percent of the average amount for this time of year. Up to now, rainfall in at least 15 states and Union territories has been normal or above normal.
