Infighting in TMC Over Syndicate Control in Suri

In a significant development, internal strife has erupted within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as the party’s Suri Municipality Chairman, Ujjwal Chattopadhyay, accused the local Block President of running a syndicate. This comes at a time when West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is determined to dismantle syndicate rule within the party.

Chairman Chattopadhyay alleged that the Block President of Suri’s No. 1 Block has been obstructing the construction of a new bus stand, attempting to monopolize the supply chain for personal gain. “The Block President is trying to establish a syndicate rule by halting the bus stand project. They want to supply everything themselves and run the syndicate,” Chattopadhyay claimed.

The accusations have provided fodder for the BJP, with Birbhum District President Dhruba Saha criticizing the TMC’s internal discord. “The Block President accuses the Chairman’s people of taking kickbacks, while the Chairman accuses the Block President. They want all the sand and soil to come from them. A section of the administration, along with the TMC, is running this syndicate,” Saha remarked.

The controversy revolves around the construction of a new bus stand on the outskirts of Suri, near National Highway 14, aimed at alleviating the town’s chronic traffic congestion. The land filling work, contracted to an agency, was disrupted by some local residents, allegedly under the influence of Block President Lala Prashant Prasad. Prasad argued that the area lacked employment opportunities under the 100-day work scheme, leaving people without income. He stated that local tractor owners wanted to do the land filling themselves, providing work to 450 laborers at a rate of 300 rupees per tractor.

The situation highlights the deep-rooted issues within the TMC, as it battles accusations of corruption and power struggles. The infighting not only undermines the party’s credibility but also hampers developmental projects essential for the community’s welfare. With both factions digging in their heels, the resolution of this conflict remains uncertain, casting a shadow over the TMC’s internal cohesion and governance capabilities.
