The Olympics always bring tales of extraordinary achievements, remarkable comebacks, and unforgettable memories. The Paris Olympics 2024 have already witnessed such an inspiring story with the exceptional return of Manu Bhaker. Adding to the annals of Olympic history, this year’s games have seen another awe-inspiring event – the participation of seven-months pregnant fencer Nada Hafez.
Contrary to the usual image of pregnant women in loose clothing and comfortable shoes, engaging in minimal activity, Nada Hafez donned a special jacket, picked up her sabre, and masked up. She had a mission – to represent her country in the Olympics. On the third day of the Paris Olympics, the world watched in amazement as Nada, despite being seven months pregnant, not only competed but also won a match. The Egyptian fencer’s performance has astonished the sports world.
At 26, Nada won her first match in the individual sabre event and progressed to the Round of 16 before facing defeat. Following her impressive run, Nada revealed her pregnancy on social media. She wrote, “You might have thought there were two competitors on the podium, but in reality, there were three – my opponent, myself, and my yet-to-be-born child.” Participating in her third Olympics, Nada is also a pathologist at Cairo University. Her post reflected the immense challenge of competing in such a demanding event while being pregnant.
In her post, Nada expressed her pride in reaching the Round of 16 despite the physical and mental challenges she and her unborn child faced. “Pregnancy itself is a challenging journey, and balancing life as an athlete makes it even more demanding but rewarding. I am proud to have reached the Round of 16,” she wrote.
Nada Hafez’s participation in the Paris Olympics while pregnant is a testament to her determination, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of athletes. Her story will inspire many and remain a remarkable chapter in the history of the Olympics.
