Paris 2024 Olympics: Indian men’s hockey team beats New Zealand 3-2 in opening match of Summer Games

In their debut game at the Paris Olympics, India defeated New Zealand thanks to a late goal from captain Harmanpreet Singh. With almost two minutes remaining in the game, Harmanpreet maintained his composure to successfully convert a penalty shot. Mandeep and Vikas were the other goal scorers for India.

India had earlier tied the score in the second quarter thanks to a goal by Mandeep Singh. In an exciting first half, both sides put their defenses to the test. With the intention of breaking their 44-year Gold Medal drought, the Indian hockey team has traveled to Paris. In what could be an exciting match, Harmanpreet Singh and company will open their campaign in Paris against world number 10 New Zealand.

With 12 medals won in hockey, India is the most successful Olympic team; yet, over the past few decades, they have not impressed on the major stage. Their final gold medal in Olympic hockey was earned back in 1980. The Indian team, on the other hand, has recovered recently and earned a bronze medal in Tokyo 2020, delighting the devoted fans of the sport who had been waiting for the squad to reach the podium.

After defeating the Netherlands 3-0 in the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, they took home their first Gold Medal. They continued to dominate, taking home Gold Medals in the Olympics in 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964, and 1980. India won eight gold medals, three silvers in 1960, three bronzes in 1968 and 1972, and three bronzes at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020.
