Protests at midnight over the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata RG Kar Medical

Thousands of people, including men and women, as well as individuals from all walks of life, have demonstrated in the streets against the horrifying case of a woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar hospital being raped and killed. A midnight vigil has been called by protestors calling for the victim’s justice. Numerous individuals, predominantly females who attended in significant numbers, were observed participating in candle marches and carrying banners among these protests in cities such as Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata.

Inside the ward, the demonstrators damaged almirahs and smashed furniture as they assembled for a nightly vigil demanding justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and died at RG Kar hospital a few days prior. When they were not inside the building, they also vandalized police cars. The police used tear gas and lathi charges to break up the large crowd that had assembled at RG Kar hospital in order to put matters under control.

Police said that some 40 individuals—posing as demonstrators—entered the hospital, damaged property, and threw stones at officers, forcing them to use tear gas to break up the crowd.

During the incident, brickbats damaged many police officers. Upon arriving at the scene at around two in the morning, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal immediately attributed the violence to rumors and posts on social media.
