With a commanding win over Afghanistan in the semifinals, South Africa guaranteed their spot in the final match. Any remaining worries about South Africa’s ability to perform under pressure were dispelled by their cool partnership, which led them to a convincing victory.
Afghanistan’s batting collapsed early in the match, as they were bowled out for just 56 runs in 11.5 overs. With 10 runs, Azmatullah Omarzai was the leading scorer for Afghanistan, who found it difficult to establish consistent partnerships against the methodical bowling assault of South Africa. With three wickets apiece, Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi spearheaded the attack, and with two wickets apiece, Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje gave vital support. After their combined effort, Afghanistan was left with the difficult challenge of protecting their meager total.
Skipper Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first but Marco Jansen’s three-wicket burst with the new ball essentially derailed the batting line-up of Afghanistan who got bowled out just 56 runs. With the win, South Africa has qualified for the final of the T20 World Cup to be played on Saturday in Barbados. The winner of the game between India and England later in the evening at Guyana will join the Proteas to claim the title.
