Tragic Fire in Kuwait Claims Lives of Dozens of Indian Nationals

In a devastating incident in southern Kuwait, a fire engulfed a building in Al-Mangaf, claiming the lives of 49 people and leaving many injured. Among the deceased were 42 Indian nationals, along with others from Egypt, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Philippines. The fire broke out early in the morning, with most fatalities attributed to smoke inhalation while residents were asleep.

The building, rented by NBTC group to accommodate over 195 workers, predominantly from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and northern Indian states, witnessed a heartbreaking loss. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the families of the deceased. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, was tasked with overseeing relief efforts and facilitating the repatriation of the bodies.

Kuwaiti authorities, including Prime Minister Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, vowed to investigate the cause of the fire and hold those responsible accountable. India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, extended condolences and assured full embassy support. The Indian Ambassador to Kuwait, Adarsh Swaika, visited the site and hospitals where the injured were receiving treatment.

Footage shared on social media captured the intensity of the blaze as firefighters battled to control it. Kuwait’s Interior Minister detained the building owner and ordered action against the company responsible for housing workers. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire and prevent similar incidents in the future.

This tragic event underscores the need for stringent safety measures in accommodations for foreign workers in Kuwait. Authorities are taking swift action to address violations and ensure the well-being of all residents.
