Travel seamlessly across bus, tram, Yatri Sathi cab and ferry with one smart card in WB soon

In a major step towards revolutionizing public transport system, the Transport Department of West Bengal is set to roll out an one-state one-card enabling passengers to switch between bus, tram, yatri sathi cab and ferry in a hassle-free way. This is going to be the first integrated travel smart card in India. The facility will be extended to private buses only if they register in the system. The benefits of the system are multi-faceted as it will offer a seamless and efficient travel across the state.

The distinct features of the initiative include automated fare collection system (AFC) across 3057 buses, supply of 5,600 Android-based online EMV (Eurocard, Master and Visa), electronic ticket machines (ETM) to enhance transparency in fare collection and reconciliation of fare from bus conductors. It will also allow users book tickets online and smart-card based ticket issuing machine (ETIM) integration to ensure hassle-free commute across different transits.

The transport department is waiting for a final nod from the finance department to go ahead with the launch of the system. “Revenue management will be improved by reducing revenue loss from loose change, minimizing cash transactions leading to greater efficacy and reduced revenue loss,” said transport minister Snehasish Chakraborty.

The software for the system is ready. The smart-card will be more beneficial during season of rush like Durga Puja, Gangasagar Mela and other festivities. The system’s cloud data storage model will ensure data security and accessibility. It also requires hardware support and maintenance at data centers and head offices including UPS, desktops, printers, switches and more. Manpower deployment is crucial for smooth and glitch-free implementation of the cutting-edge project.
