Early on Thursday morning, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat will square off against American competitor Sarah Hildebrandt in the women’s 50kg final of the Paris 2024 Olympic wrestling competition. On August 8, at approximately 12:30 AM in India, Vinesh Phogat’s gold medal match will take place. It will be televised and streamed live.
Unseeded at the start of the tournament, Vinesh Phogat advanced to the championship round thanks to three strong victories. In the first round, the 29-year-old wrestler upset Japan’s Yui Susaki, the top seed and champion of Tokyo 2020. In the quarterfinals, Vinesh defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine, the former European champion, and in the semifinals, Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba, the current Pan American Games champion.
In her opening round, sixth-seeded Sarah Hildebrandt defeated Ibtissem Doudou of Algeria thanks to her better technical skills. Sarah defeated three-time World Championship medallist Dolgorjavyn Otgonjargal of Mongolia 5-0 to get to the final after defeating Feng Ziqi of the People’s Republic of China 7-4 in the quarterfinals. Three gold medals from the Commonwealth Games have been won by Vinesh Phogat. The Indian wrestler competed at the 2018 Asian Games and took home the gold medal, but an injury kept him out of the 2023 competition. She has also won bronze twice at the World Championships, but in the women’s 53kg division each time.
