Wayanad Landslides: Search Concludes with No Survivors Found at Site of Detected Breath Signal

The Indian Army has terminated its search operation in the area where a thermal scanner had previously detected a breath signal, indicating potential survivors. However, upon further investigation, no individuals were found at the location, leading to the conclusion of the search efforts.

Friday’s Search Efforts in Mundakkai Top

The Indian Army‘s thermal scanner detected a life signal under the debris in Mundakkai top on Friday, prompting a thorough search operation. However, the expert conducting the search confirmed that no human or animal was found, suggesting the scanner might have detected a small animal like a frog or snake.

Search Operations Suspended and Resumed

The search was suspended due to lack of results and concerns about the dilapidated building’s stability. However, it resumed overnight, guided by floodlights and assisted by earthmovers and an ambulance. Army personnel used thermal scanners to detect breathing signals, but no human or animal was found.

Death Toll and Missing Persons

The landslide death toll reached 334, with 276 people still missing. Search operations, carried out by 40 teams across six zones, resumed on Friday morning.

Search Operations and Challenges

The search operations are challenging due to waterlogged soil and uprooted trees. Heavy machinery is required to remove debris and search collapsed buildings. Despite these challenges, rescuers continue their efforts, with 1,300 personnel from various agencies and the armed forces involved in the joint search-and-rescue operations.

Relief Efforts and Autopsies

Over 9,000 people have been relocated to 91 relief camps, with 143 bodies and body parts recovered from the Chaliyar river. Autopsies and identification processes are ongoing, with 279 autopsies completed and 107 bodies identified.
